The Definition of Being MODERN

Modern is one of the most used and abused word. When someone calls you 'modern' you may have felt great. For most of us being modern means following the latest trends and fashion, that's how being modern ends up in just being trendy. Well, that is not completely wrong. According of Oxford Advanced Dictionary, the word 'Modern' is a adjective which means " new and intended to be different from traditional style" and synonymous with "up to date"
The word 'Modern' actually came from a Latin word 'Modo' which means 'just now'. In Late Latin it became 'Modernus' and in modern English it was accepted as 'Modern'.
What is the meaning of being 'modern'? Is it just being trendy or being liberal and broad minded? Personally speaking, we use this word so superficially. We think or you may say we are insisted to think that just following the Western culture, drinking, kissing, smoking and doing other things make us 'cool' and following these things make us 'trendy' and as 'being trendy' is 'being modern' , so  we are 'modern'. Living in the 21st century defining 'modern' in this narrower sense, don't you think it is inappropriate?
Being modern means living your life in a broader way. It is not just only about trend, it means being traditional as well as trendy. 'Modern' means freedom, living your life in more cooler and smarter way, but not necessarily just showing off. We are evolving continuously and there are new developments everyday. Being 'modern' is being updated, changing and evolving yourself everyday everyway. It means thinking, interpreting, behaving in a cooler way, not just wearing skimpy jeans and crop tops. It means dressing in a proper way but not making fun of others for their dressing sense. Being modern is not wearing makeups, it means respect others for what they are, not laughing at them for not wearing something trendy. It is about staying updated rather than humiliating others for something they don't know. It is not about having the latest gadgets but more being happy with what you have. Being modern means having a rationalistic view of things rather sticking to the old concepts and an unbiased way to see life being where you are. Being modern means having the ability to differentiate between what is ethical and what is not and applying it in your life. Being modern is being yourself but not forgetting your culture. It is more about being liberal, broad minded and kind and not forgetting your roots. But we busy ourselves proving to the world that we are intelectual rather knowing the facts and end up proving ourselves hypocrites.
No matter which part of the world you belong to, your caste, sex, age, skin, religion cannot define if you are modern or not. Modernise your mind and then your attitude, change your perspective, don't limit it just to your dress only, reflect it on you, see the world the way you want to see, enjoy your life, be happy, be ethical, be rational- these are what make you real 'modern' in this so called 'modern' age.
