"I'm some who likes codes and ciphers and chases and artworks and architecture, and all the things you find in a Robert Langdon series"- this is what Dan Brown said when he was asked about it and not surprisingly I am too. Every time I read a book from the Robert Langdon series, I again and again fall in love with the character.
Robert Langdon is the professor of History of Art and Symbology at Havard University. His family is not known in any book but his great-grandfather was Howard Langdon. He was born on July 22, 1964 (July 22 is actually Brown's birthday) in Exeter, New Hampshire. He completed his schooling from Phillip Exeter Academy. Langdon was a diver there in prep school. Then he attended Princeton University, he was a water polo player back then. He once fell into a well and from then he has "claustrophobia". He lost his father when he was 12. After than Peter Solomon, Secretary of Smithsonian Institution became a father figure to him. He has probing blue eyes, fairly pale complexion, thick black hair with wisps of gray, dimpled chin, and a strong, carefree smile. His voice was arrestingly deep, low, and baritone which had been described by his female students as “chocolate for the ears.” He was six foot tall and his body was the one of a swimmer, lean and toned. He looks like "Harrison Ford" in "Harris Tweed" wearing turtleneck, Harris Tweed jacket, khakis, cordovan loafers everywhere, from his lectures to any social events. He wears a Micky Mouse clock which he recieved as a gift from his parents when he was only 9. He drives a Saab 900S car. He has a nickname "Dolphin".
Being a professor of History of Art and Symbology, Langdon is mainly in focus for his eidetic memory, brilliance and intelligence. As a teacher he is tough and strict disciplinarian but he loves fun too. He has got some skills which helps him in bizzare conditions, he is a sea of knowledge and loves to share it with people around him. His interpretations actually help to clearly understand the meaning and purpose of the scene. This is something that makes his character more special as the informations are not given blantly rather in a form of conversation. He is kind of a daydreamer, during a highly thrilled position he remembers a lecture he had given in a university or so (example of what you need to do in crisis, right?) but these memories are sometimes give "Eureka" kind of moments. His tendency to know everything makes his character more attractive to the readers. No matter what the situation is he always want to do what is right, so it can be said that he is a ethical guy. He is open minded and he knows how to draw everyone's attention to him.
As his hobby there was clear mention of swimming. Langdon is a great swimmer and swam laps daily as a "morning ritual". Though Langdon was born Catholic but he never practised it. He never understood God and he mentioned that faith is a gift he has yet to receive.
Though he is single but that’s not his focus right now. There is some mutual attraction between him and the beautiful and brilliant police cryptographer, Sophie Neveu. He is more easy with puzzles than people. (sounds weird, right?)
Being an author of various books on symbols, Langdon is widely famous. Symbols of the Lost Sacred Feminine, which won him recognition by Jacques Saunière and involved him in the events of The Da Vinci Code. This renown as a symbologist caught the attention of CERN in 2000, which led him to The Vatican, and of the WHO in 2013, which led him to Florence.
When in "Da Vinci Code" was released as a movie, Tom Hanks played Langdon. He portrayed the character so beautifully. You should definitely give it a watch whenever you find time!!
