Probably we use Google every day, but how much do we know about it? We find out some facts which we never knew before about Google. It is just a small initiative to Google the ‘Google’.
1.The cofounders of Google Sergey Brin and Larry (Lawrence) Page met by chance. In 1995 Page earned his Computer engineering degree from the University of Michigan, considers attending Stanford University for his Ph.D. Brin, already a Ph.D. candidate at the prestigious institution, is assigned to show Page around campus. Most students are happy just to get a passing grade on their research projects. Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded an empire on theirs. They had no idea their project would lead to the creation of the digital behemoth
known as Google.
2.Google was originally named BackRub, which linked to Brin’s and Page’s 90s-tastic original homepages, lived on Stanford’s server for more than a year, but eventually chewed up too much bandwidth.
3.Google is perhaps the biggest and most public mistake ever made. The name ‘Google’ is actually derived from the mathematical term ‘Googol’, which is basically 1 with 100 zeros following it!
4.Starting in September 1998, the company’s first workspace was Susan Wojcicki’s garage on Santa Margarita Ave. in Menlo Park, California.
5.Google employees are called ‘Googlers’ and new Google employees are called ‘Nooglers’.
6.Google was nearly sold for less than a million dollars!! The former CEO of internet company Excite, George Bell was made an offer to buy Google for $1 million back in 1999, he declined. The price was knocked down to at $750,000 but he still declined, saying the asking price was too high. Bells’ refusal has been thought as one of the worst business decisions ever made.
7.In April of 2000, Google announced the release of ‘Mentalplex’, which was actually the first of what would become several cheeky Google hoaxes announced each year on April Fool’s Day. Other Google hoaxes have included an animal translator, a google maps treasure hunt, edible cable fibre and announcing Google would be forming a colony on Mars.
8.Since 2009,Google has replaced lawnmowers with a herd of 200 goats to maintain the lawns at its Mountain View HQ.Dan Hoffman, director of real estate and workplace services at Google California ,claims it costs about the same as mowing, adding ,”Goats are a lot cuter to watch than lawnmowers”.
9.The first instance of Google being used as a verb— “to Google” something—on television occurred during Oct.15,2002, episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
10.No part of a Google office is more than 150 feet away from food. Wherever they are in the office, employees are never more than 150 feet away from some kind of food.
11.Did you know the very first Google Doodle was made in August30, 1998 in celebration of the Burning Man Festival? There first Doodle was a burning Man Stick figure.
12.There is a rotated version of Google known as ‘Google Mirror’, which shows everything in mirrored image.
13.Stanford still owns the patent to Google’s algorithm, named PageRank.
